Job Description:

About Howard Financial

Howard Financial is a tech-forward outsourced accounting and finance firm serving clients across Vacation Rental, Hospitality, Consumer & E-Commerce, and Development & Real Estate. We combine strong technical accounting with modern tools to give our clients clarity and confidence in their numbers.

About the Role

We're looking for a Junior Income Tax Associate to join our growing tax team and prepare U.S. federal and state income tax returns for a portfolio of clients across our four industries. You'll work closely with our Tax Managers, who will review your work, coach you, and gradually hand you more complex engagements.

This is a hands-on, learning-heavy role. You'll get exposure to individual, partnership, and corporate returns, and build a solid foundation in U.S. income tax inside a fast-moving, multi-client environment.

What You'll Do

  • Prepare U.S. federal and state income tax returns, including Forms 1040, 1065, 1120-S, and 1120, for review by a Tax Manager
  • Prepare extensions and quarterly estimated tax payment calculations
  • Gather and organize client documents (W-2s, 1099s, K-1s, trial balances), and follow up on anything missing
  • Tie book-to-tax adjustments back to the client's financial statements and general ledger
  • Prepare supporting workpapers, including fixed asset and depreciation schedules
  • Help draft responses to IRS and state notices under a manager's guidance
  • Keep the tax deadline tracker and client files current, so nothing slips during busy season
  • Flag questions and inconsistencies early, rather than waiting to be asked

What You Bring

  • 1–2 years of experience preparing U.S. income tax returns, at a CPA firm, an outsourcing firm, or an in-house tax team
  • Working knowledge of Forms 1040, 1065, and 1120-S, including how K-1s flow to individual returns
  • Hands-on experience with professional tax software (UltraTax, Lacerte, ProConnect, CCH Axcess, Drake, or similar)
  • A degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Strong Excel skills and a sharp eye for detail
  • Professional written English and spoken English strong enough to work with U.S.-based teammates

Nice to Have

  • Experience with multi-state returns or real estate and pass-through entities
  • Familiarity with QuickBooks Online or Xero

Backgrounds That Fit

Tax associates or staff accountants from U.S.-focused CPA firms, outsourcing firms, or shared-service centers who have completed at least one or two tax seasons and want to grow toward senior and manager-level tax work.

Is Howard Right for You?

Howard isn't for everyone, and that's intentional. We're a fast-growing startup, which means things move quickly, priorities shift, and not every process is fully built yet. We're looking for people who:

  • Take initiative and act before being asked
  • Aren't afraid to roll up their sleeves and dig into the details, even when the work isn't glamorous
  • See ambiguity as an opportunity to build, not a reason to wait
  • Are hungry to learn, grow, and take on more responsibility over time

If that sounds like you, we'd love to talk.

What We Offer

  • Competitive pay, based on experience
  • Quarterly performance bonus, tied to team and individual results
  • Unlimited paid time off
  • 100% remote work, collaborating with a global team from anywhere
  • 10 paid holidays per year; choose local or U.S. holidays
  • Annual performance reviews with clear feedback and growth discussions
  • A clear path to grow into Senior and Manager-level tax roles as the tax practice expands
  • Learning culture where curiosity, feedback, and continuous improvement are encouraged
  • A supportive team of sharp, friendly people who care about great work
